EDUCATION FOR TOLIARA (Amboasary)

Growing Minds, Growing Faith
Since 2022 members and friends of St James the Less Episcopal Church in Northfield, IL have been sponsoring the education of children at private schools in their link District of Amboasary, Madagascar; and also enabling hundreds of other children to go to public school.

Individual Child Sponsorship Program
We invite you to sponsor children to attend private schools, which have considerably better facilities than public schools – desks and textbooks, for example! Existing sponsors keep the same child(ren) each year, and may continue to support their child through university or their vocational training.

You will be sent photo(s), news of the child’s progress in school and occasionally hear from them by email. You can be sure they will pray for you. You may send emails with scans of birthday or Christmas cards, photos of yourself, our Church, our local area etc, which will be translated into Malagasy, before being printed. They will be treasured!

Costs of Toliara Child Sponsorship
$360 per year or $30 per month per child covers school enrollment & tuition fees; school supplies, and uniforms; health checks; and a menstrual kit for girls of the relevant age. $379 will provide support for your child to study at a state university.

An additional $50 will provide a water filter, which will last for at least three years.

Public School Support Program
Public schools are free, but parents have to buy the necessary school supplies. Once again we are hoping to support the schools at Marodo Ankilemasy and Ampanavy, for which we will provide teaching materials such as set squares, rulers, pairs of compasses, chalk, and some more class textbooks.
We have been asked to provide the materials to build an extra classroom at the pre-school at Tsihaviandro, which feeds into the two primary schools at Marodo Ankilemasy and Ampanavy. Currently both years are sharing this one classroom.

Costs of School Supplies Program:
The cost of the necessary materials is about $1750, and the villagers will provide the labor to construct it. Any extra raised will help provide the necessary supplies for teachers and students, and water filters for each classroom.

$20 will send a child to school for the entire year, and help provide the teachers with supplies and textbooks. Donations of any size are welcome. Think big! In previous years, one couple sent 50 children to school last year! Another individual provided for 25. Would you like to do that this year?

Water Filters Program:
The Diocese of Toliara, in partnership with Education Equals Hope and their clean water initiative, Hope 2 Others, is providing water filters to families and schools, which will easily produce clean, safe drinking water.

As well as filtering out soil particles, Hope 2 Others filters protect against serious health conditions like cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio. Contaminated drinking water has also led to Madagascar having one of the highest rates of stunted growth for children under five, causing lasting physical and cognitive damage.

In the past year, we have provided water filters to the families of all the sponsored children.

Also 10 filters were given to each of the 8 churches in Ampanavy and Ankilimitraha parishes. Each of these filters is shared by 5 families, so around 320 people are benefiting.

This year we are hoping to provide a water filter for every classroom at the public schools at Marodo Ankilemasy, Ampanavy and Tsihaviandro, and also some for the private school that our sponsored children attend. Maybe we will also be able to provide reusable water bottles for each child.
