Haiti - Central Plateau
Since 1979, the Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina (EDUSC) has been deeply committed to mission and ministry in Cange, which is in Haiti’s Central Plateau. One of our first and most important endeavors involves education. In 1982, we partnered with Father Lafontant to build and establish Ecole Bon Sauveur (EBS), providing the first and only access children of the village had to primary education. Since those early years, EBS as grown and added a secondary school, College Bon Sauveur (CBS), which continues to be the largest and most prestigious school in the village, with a student body of 1,200.
As the population has grown, particularly with refugees after the earthquake, two additional schools were founded in Cange - La Pleiade School and Emmanuel Kant, each of which enroll around 700 students and offer K-12 (Baccalaureate). EDUSC World Missions Committee has been supporting students in all these schools with need-based scholarships for the past eight years.
In 2024, the EDUSC World Missions Committee approached Education Equals Hope (e=h) to consider partnering with our six schools in and around Cange. Our collaboration will impact three schools in Cange proper that offer K-12 (Baccalaureate). The remaining three schools are in more remote villages offering only primary K-6. This will bring our total number of students served in and around Cange to approximately 3,000.
We believe that education does indeed equal HOPE in rural Haiti, offering our students a pathway to literacy and professional training as teachers, nurses, doctors, agronomists, accountants, and therapist of all sorts.
We’ve been blessed many times over by our relationships in Haiti. As their country continues to struggle for political stability and economic development post-earthquake and Covid, we are now called to recommit to this partnership. We are grateful for this partnership with e=h and believe together we will make lasting impacts for our students in Haiti.
