Help Me Teach English in San Ramon, Costa Rica
My name is Alice Kunce and I’ve been teaching middle school English throughout the US since 2005.
Recently, I’ve been feeling burned out and was looking for a way to give back that reflected my call to love and serve my neighbors. After talking with my minister at Church of the Ascension-Silver Spring, she connected me with Education Equals Hope (e=h). I scoured their website and loved how e=h asks communities what they need and then matches volunteers based on these identified needs.
When Costa Rica passed a law requiring all students to receive English instruction, a need for an English teacher was identified by the local community. They reached out to e=h and asked for a teacher willing to live in their remote community.
Through a partnership with e=h, the Community Action Alliance and Costa Rica’s Ministry for Education, I was placed in the rural province of San Ramon.
I spent the summer of 2024 teaching English at a village school while living with a host family on their dairy goat farm. I then returned again in the fall and added two more schools to my teaching schedule.
One morning while traveling between one-room schoolhouses, I pulled over to admire the view from the top of the mountain. A feeling of peace and rightness settled over me. For the first time in a long while, I felt like I was in exactly the right place at exactly the right time. I believe that God has called me to the mission field to love and serve our neighbors in Costa Rica.
Your donation will cover the cost of my room and board for the 2025 school year which runs from February through December. I will travel between three schools instructing elementary students in English fulfilling the requirements of Costa Rica’s education initiative. I will also provide English tutoring and conversation practice for area high school students.
Will you help me provide HOPE through an English education to students in San Ramon?
